Debe Sham (b. in Hong Kong) is an artist and researcher who studied visual arts and postgraduate sculpture, and is currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate (expected to finish in 2025) at the Academy of Visual Arts in the School of Creative Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. Rooted in both practice and theory, her research investigates the potential of play in art as a system of action that activates curiosity and facilitates the exploration of new affordances through bodily practices including attention change or habit breaking. Sham has taught studio courses (in sculpture and glass) at the Department of Digital Arts and Creative Industries at Lingnan University, the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the AVA.

Sham's art practice comprises toys, sculpture, research, field work, print media, performance, and more, often presented as site-specific sculptures and multi-media/mixed-media installations in galleries and public spaces. Her work is underpinned by an ongoing engagement with an expanded sculptural practice including performative objects and architectural interventions, which invite play/participation through the creation of new modes of presentation. At times, she draws on international connections for multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations, thus opening up the confines of individual authorship.

Important residencies, solo and group exhibitions of Sham's sculptures/projects/research have been held at the Sculpture Biennial (2016), New Haven Green (2017), Tai Kwun Contemporary (2020-2021), Grotto Fine Art (2023), Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (2024), University Museum Art Gallery (2024), and many more. Her works have earned her fellowships and grants, including the DADI Art Fellowship (2015), Yale-China Art Fellowship (2017), Inside Burger Collection (2019) and VA! Spotlight Commission (2024).
